Large tracts of land in Australia are heritage listed as is the Great Barrier Reef. Far North Queensland is the only place in the world where two world heritage areas - the Daintree National Park and the Great Barrier Reef meet.

Brisbane
  • The second largest state in Australia
  • Covers approximately 25% of Australia
  • The capital city is Brisbane
  • It is Australia’s fastest growing state with a population of 3,800,000 people
  • Climate – temperatures vary from hot and humid in the far north to cool in the south east
  • Home to one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef. It is the world’s largest coral reef system and encompasses 2,900 reefs and over 900 islands.
  • The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is the world largest marine protected area in the world, and contains the planets most complex ecosystem

VICTORIA – The Garden State 

Melbourne
  • The second smallest state in Australia
  • The capital city is Melbourne
  • Climate – warm dry summers and cool to mild, wet winters
  • A famous parade of fairy penguins can be found at Philips Islands at dusk
  • Melbourne is reputed for being Australia’s cultural and sporting capital. It has over 101 football fields and cricket pitches which are found in inner Melbourne
  • The state produces 13% of all the earth’s manufactured dairy produce 

NEW SOUTH WALES – The Premier State 

Sydney
  • Covers approximately 10.4% of Australia
  • The capital city is Sydney
  • It is Australia’s most populated state
  • Climate – long summers and short mild winters
  • Home to Australia’s highest mountain range, Snowy Mountains which contain Australia’s highest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko
  • Sydney is reputed for the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House and the world’s greatest seaport
  • Sydney Harbour is considered to be the world’s most beautiful natural harbour
  • Sydney Opera House is one of the worlds famous performing arts centre and one of the most unique buildings constructed

NORTHERN TERRITORY – The Territory

  • Covers approximately one sixth of Australia
  • The capital city is Darwin, the least populated capital in Australia
  • 1% of Australia’s population reside in Northern Territory
  • Home to the world’s largest rock formation, Uluru (Ayers Rock), 348m high and 9.4 km round
  • The site of Australia’s last major goldrush which took place in the 1930’s can be found at Tennant Creek

AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY – The Capital 

  • It is the nations center of government and politics
  • The state was formed for the sole purpose of creating Australia’s capital, Canberra with its own territory
  • Home to the Parliament House
  • 55% of the state is forested
  • Canberra is reputed for its manmade lake, Lake Burley-Griffin
  • Home to Jervis Bay which is reputed to have the worlds clearest waters and whitest sands

TASMANIA – The Apple Isle 

  • The smallest state in Australia
  • It is an island state separated by a body of water called the Bass Strait
  • The capital city is Hobart
  • Climate – temperate with snow in the mountains during winter
  • The state boasts the world’s cleanest air and purest rainwater
  • Port Arthur contains the most complete ruins of a convict settlement
  • Australia’s deepest natural freshwater and deepest caves are found in this state
  • Only home of the Tasmanian Devil
  • Although the west coast of Tasmania is one of the wettest places in the world, Hobart is the second driest capital city in Australia
